While pressure has been mounting on the Khmer Rouge tribunal to pursue more cases, former Khmer Rouge cadre in the former stronghold of Anlong Veng say they are uneasy with a prospect of more arrests. As a resident here in Anlong Veng district in northwestern Cambodia, Um Mek said he had always wanted to see former Khmer Rouge leaders held accountable for atrocities committed under their rule. So, the father of three daughters says, it is the right thing to do to have brought the leaders of the regime to face justice. “The Khmer Rouge leaders then did the wrongdoings, so they must now be brought to trial.” Nuon Chea, the Khmer Rouge's chief ideologue; Khieu Samphan, the nominal head of state; and Ieng Sary, the foreign minister, are currently on trial by the Khmer Rouge tribunal for atrocity crimes including genocide.
