Voice of Vietnam To Expand With New Office

During three days of official talks here this week, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet is expected to open a representative office of the Voice of Vietnam radio.

Vietnamese and Cambodian officials say the new office will help expand the reach of VOV, which currently has three reporters and broadcasts into the provinces of Svay Rieng, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk.

“Normally, the role of VOV's representatives here are to report information from Cambodia to Vietnam,” said Ngo Thi Hoa, deputy chief of mission for the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh. “I think this office is very important for the relations between the two countries, because VOV will report only information from Cambodia to Vietnam.”

Ngo said the broadcaster's reporters supplement their information with news reports from wire services like Reuters, the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse.

The new office will be followed by five more transmitters for expansion in other provinces, according to the Ministry of Information.
