Opposition Activist Murdered in Kampong Speu Province

PHNOM PENH - An activist for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party was shot and killed in Kampong Speu province Monday, officials and family said Tuesday.

The activist, 67-year-old Sun Soeurn, was shot by two unknown assailants in the village of Smek Preal, in Phnom Scroch district, opposition officials said.

Sun Soeurn had joined in the opposition campaigning in July, officials for the Rescue Party said.

The victim’s wife, Pich Ann, 57, said the men showed up on Monday night around 8 pm, requesting to buy a box of beer and inviting her husband to drink with them. He declined, but when he approached them to give them change, they shot him in the head, she said.

Oung Samith, the provincial coordinator for the rights group Licadho, said the killing appeared to have been professional, due to the type of ammunition used and the nature of the killing. Licadho will investigate the case further, he said.

Soun Chan, the deputy district police chief, said police are investigating. He did not say whether police currently believe the killing was politically motivated.
