SRP Urges Burma to Do the Right Things - 2004-08-09

The SRP Members of Parliament join the international community in calling for the Burmese Military Junta to do the right things the Burmese people expect from it.

Burma junta leader General Khin Nyunt will visit Cambodia this week.

The parliamentarians call on ASEAN to withhold the Burma membership until there is an irreversible sign of some acceptable democratization and respect for human rights in the country.

The SRP also asks Burma to release all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo, and leaders of ethnic nationality groups.

Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said the Sam Rainsy party copied his criticism on Burma from the European community and the United States for political gains. He said ASEAN has a different way of solving its problems and that ASEAN has a policy of non-interference.
