Unions Members Marched to the Royal Palace - 2004-06-22

The Free Labor Union of Cambodia (FLUC) and the Independent Teachers Association of Cambodia (ITAC) on Tuesday completed a peaceful march in Phnom Penh as planned.

More than 70 representatives from about the same number of unions in Cambodia carried the petition signed by more than 20 thousand people to the Royal Palace.

Copies of the petition were also presented to the National Assembly, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights and the U.S. Embassy.

The president of ITAC, Mr. Rong Chhun said the purpose of the petition is to ask King Norodom Sihanouk to name the late president of the FLUC, Chea Vichea, a labor union hero.

Chea Vichea was slained on January 22, 2004 in broad daylight at a newsstand in Phnom Penh. Top officials from Cambodia's three main parties expressed their support for the petition.
