Fire Killed Seven People in Phnom Penh - 2004-04-16

A Cambodian family of seven was killed in a fire that ripped through their home and neighborhood in the capital Phnom Penh early Friday.

Un Porn, 42 his wife Hun Tuor, 37, died along with their four children aged 1 to 15 and their 16-year old niece in a fire that gutted some six hours.

The families in the other homes safely fled the fire. Police said the fire started from a short circuit in the victims' terrace house, but relatives believed it occured from the incense and candle burning during the New Year celebrations.

Witnesses also blame the slow response of the fire rescue squad that contributed to the death of the victims.
