Opposition Party Says Crackdown on Internet Cafes is Illegal - 2004-03-02

A member of the Opposition Party says the crackdown on the telephone use in Internet Cafes is illegal because Cambodia does not have a law banning phone calls through the Internet.

Mr. Keo Remy urges the government to return computers, scanners, and printers to the owners of the Internet Cafe and allow them to resume operations.

Internet Cafes throughout Cambodia allow people to make very cheap phone calls to other countries. It costs less than 10 cent a minute to call the United States. Landline calls cost at least 2 dollars a minute.

The secretary of the ministry of post and telecommunications said the government crack down on the internet phone calls because the internet cafes did not have license and these internet calls make the government lose a lot of revenues a year.
