One woman was killed and her son was seriously injured in Phnom Penh Monday morning when a garment factory shipping container fell off its truck into traffic, police said.
Mao Sunly, 50, a nurse from Stung Treng district, Kampon Cham province, was crushed when the container fell off the truck on a muddy section of road in a garment factory area of Phnom Penh's Russei Keo district, police said.
Mao Sunly's 25-year-old son, Sam Phalla sustained injuries to his waist and hips and was trapped beneath the container for 20 minutes before he was taken by ambulance to Calmette Hospital.
Sam Phalla was conscious and in stable condition late Monday, police said.
The driver fled the scene and is being sought by police, said Preap Kha, Tuol Sangke commune police chief.
Police are also investigating the source company of the container, he said.
"When I ran from my home, I saw that the body of the victim was under the container, and I felt shocked," said Pha Sarouen, 61, who runs a small business near the scene of the accident.
The container was "carelessly" secured, he said, adding that the accident had not cost too many lives because it had occurred when many garment workers were off the road.
