Group Trains Police on Tribunal Witness Protection

About 150 police officials have completed training from the Khmer Institute for Democracy on protecting witnesses for the Khmer Rouge tribunal.

International and Cambodian jurists broke lingering deadlocks for internal rules of the tribunal last week, opening the way for the beginning of trials of the aging former leaders of the Khmer Rouge.

The witness protection project aims to train more police on witness protection in practices that meet international standards. It educates rural Cambodians about witness protection, reparation and victim participation in trials.
