The Alliance for Freedom of Speech in Cambodia Thursday sets free some sparrows in front of Prey Sar prison, demanding for the release of 3 people detained by authorities, in an issue to incite the residents to rise up against an eviction of about 1,000 families by the government in June.
During the eviction 3 people in Tunle Bassac, Khan Chamcar Mon were detained in Prey Sar prison by authorities for a month now, charged with damaging public properties and inciting unrest.
The Alliance for Freedom of Speech in Cambodia, some NGOs and the residents' families, with some 100 participants, Thursday march from Prey Sar temple to Prey Sar prison to bring some supplies and money to the detainees.
NGOs Licadho director Pung Chhiv Kek says that the gesture of setting free sparrows symbolizes freedom of the prisoners who should not be detained because of land issues.
Prison officials cannot be reached for comments, but Prime Minister Hun Sen said in the past that the people should not be imprisoned due to land issues.
