Interview With Extraordinary Chambers for Khmer Rouge Tribunal's Spokesman

The names of the Khmer judges and prosecutors for the Khmer Rouge tribunal have been chosen by King Sihamoni.

The Extraordinary Chamber of the Cambodia court is happy to have received the news from the Supreme Council of Magistracy on the selection and appointment of the national and international judges and prosecutors for the tribunal.

This procedure shows the Cambodian people and the international community that the Cambodian government and the UN push forward a just and important tribunal.

The names and numbers of judges and prosecutors have not been announced pending King Sihamoni's signature on the royal decree.

The list of names and biographies will be announced later. Mr. Reach Sambath, spokesman of the Extraordinary Chamber says that the national judges and prosecutors are chosen from the municipal Phnom Penh court and they have to meet international standards and have transparency.

UN General Secretary Kofi Annan chose the international judges and prosecutors, and the national judges are chosen by the Supreme Council of Magistracy which is under the leadership of King Sihamoni.

Later, in June the prosecutors will swear in and start working. After this, the co-judges for investigation will follow, and last the judges will step in. Mr. Reach Sambath says that he hopes the aging and ailing former Khmer Rouge leaders will be alive when the tribunal begins.
