U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia Praises PM Hun Sen on His Decision to Drop Defamation Charges

U.S. Ambassador Joseph Mussomeli praises PM Hun Sen's decision to drop charges against the recently released activists, but wants to see opposition party's leader Sam Rainsy receive the same liniency from the Prime Minister, because the self-exiled leader needs to come back home.

He says he welcomes Mr. Hun Sen's decision, and he thinks that Mr. Hun Sen is working in a determined way, trying to reconcile.

The four activists recently released are journalist media Mam Sonando, rights activists Kem Sokha, and Pa Nguon Teang, both from U.S. funded Cambodia Center for Human Rights (CCHR), and union leader Rong Chhun, imprisoned on defamation charges and border issues.

Opposition party leader Sam Rainsy's defamation sentence was not discussed during Mr. Hun Sen's telephone conversation with Mr. Kem Sokha when the prime minister told Mr. Kem of his intention to drop the charges.

Mr. Mussomeli says that Cambodia still has many problems.
