Prince Ranariddh Says FUNCINPEC Will Stop Attack Strategies on CPP

FUNCINPEC President Norodom Ranariddh says that his party will stop using mud slinging tactics to attack CPP in the next election for the sake of peace and political stability.

Prince Ranariddh says he will continue to support Prime Minister Hun Sen for the position if CPP wins. Speaking at the party's congress at the Olympic Stadium Monday, Ranariddh says his party will join force with the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) in the next general election in 2008.

The FUNCINPEC President said instead of attacking each other the two parties will mention their achievements, good cooperation as important factors for the country's peace, development, independence and sovereignty.

Sam Rainsy party (SRP) legislator Yim Sovann says that this alliance between FUNCINPEC and CPP poses no problem for the opposition party. The SRP lawmaker said there are only two main political parties for Cambodians to choose: CPP and SRP. He said Funcinpec joined the CPP in exchange for high positions.

SRP President Sam Rainsy, who has been living in exile in Europe since February after the National Assembly voted to strip his parliamentary immunity, met with 30 members from the Senate, the Aassembly, and the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) Executive Committee members in Manilla, Philippines, to strengthen his party position.

Prime Minister Hun Sen says CPP will convene its party congress soon.

Political observers in Cambodia say the FUNCINPEC-CPP alliance will make Funcinpec lose its popularity, and will make the CPP and SRP more popular.
