Former King Sihanouk Wants No Audience

Former King Norodom Sihanouk, on his website page, appealed to the Cambodian officials and his people not to send him messages of good wishes, glorifying him or praising him when he is very ill and near death.

Every 3 or 6 months, the monarch went to Beijing for medical treatment, but for the last trip, the former King did not return to Cambodia. The 83-year old monarch is feeling bad because Prime Minister Hun Sen's government ordered all local TV stations to air the pre-1979 border agreements which the former King signed with Vietnam, and some radio stations also broadcasted a song which mocks the former King.

Mr. Kem Sokha, director of Cambodia Center for Human Rights, said that his Majesty should not be disturbed due to his old age and illness. Mr. Son Chhay, opposition Sam Rainsy party legislator said that the former King is ill and that he feels hurt by the airing of the pre-1997 border talks with Vietnam which he signed, and the broadcasting of a song related to his Majesty, which seems to make the former King look bad.

Mr. Khieu Kanharith, government spokesman cannot be reached for comment.
