Washington, DC-based AFL-CIO appeals to Prime Minister Hun Sen to release Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers' Association. In a letter sent to Prime Minister Hun Sen which VOA receives Tuesday, the AFL-CIO said that Mr. Hun Sen's action is an obvious violation of the freedom of speech, international rights and a warning to activists and the work force not to express their opinions.
There were reactions from a number of institutions such as the AFL-CIO, the EI in Belgium, the Academic Association in Canada, the Malaysia Union, the Teachers Union in Japan, and a number of unions in the world.
Mr. Leng Bun Hong, Cambodian Independent Teachers's Association's administrative official, said that he is trying to get a number of unions to intervene in Mr. Rong Chhun's release. Mr. Ker Chamnan, Mr. Rong Chhun's lawyer said that the court will inform him about the possibility of having his client stay out of detention Tuesday.
