Prince Sisowath Thomico said Koh Tral was lost to Vietnam in 1982 but the Cambodian government said that's not true. Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said that the prince does not understand the treaty and that the island was under Vietnam's control since the French colonization era. Khieu Kanharith said Koh Tral is occupied by Vietnam since the colonial time.
He said that Prince Thomico is not familiar with the law and was just guessing. He said that the Prince does not understand the situation, and that he just wants to criticize the government.
He said that the government is aware that the island was under Vietnam's control for a long time, and that many administrations want to claim it back, but Vietnam controls it since the French era.
According to Kanharith, saying that island Koh Tral was lost to the Vietnamese in 1982 is a serious charge.
He said that the government just asks its lawyer to look at some laws and it is not ready to file a lawsuit yet.
