Two Convicted for Murder of Cambodian Union Leader

A Cambodian court has convicted two men for the murder of a prominent union leader last year and has sentenced each to 20 years in prison.

Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun were found guilty today (Monday) of premeditated murder and the illegal use of weapons in the January 22nd, 2004 shooting. The victim, Chea Vichea, was the head of Cambodia's Free Trade Union of Workers.

Earlier, the two men claimed in their testimony that police concocted the charges against them and coerced them into confessing.

Unionists have said the men were falsely charged with the murder by a government under pressure to quickly find those responsible.
