Thai PM Explains Post-Coup Policy to Foreign Diplomats

Thailand's interim prime minister is holding meetings with foreign diplomats to try to outline the policies of the post-coup government.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will brief at least 63 diplomats today (Thursday) on where Thailand's military leaders plan to take the country over the next year.

Thai military leaders removed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from power in a bloodless coup last month, vowing to purge corruption from the government. Before the coup, Mr. Thaksin faced public calls for his resignation over alleged abuse of power and graft.

Mr. Surayud has vowed to unite the country. He will remain prime minister until elections are held in October 2007.

The international community has called for an immediate return to democracy in Thailand.

Meanwhile, King Bhumibol Adulyadej approved a new parliament today (Thursday) dominated by military officials, retired bureaucrats and academics.
