The CPP Proposes the Restructuring of the Assembly's Committees

Based on a letter which Prime Minister Hun Sen sent to Prince Norodom Ranaridh, National Assembly's president, and royalist FUNCINPEC party leader, the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) led by Mr.Hun Sen, pushes for the restructuring of the National Assembly's committees with opposition Sam Rainsy party's (SRP) members' presence.

The letter clarifies that the CPP proposes the reformatting of the National Assembly's committees' structure according to a new formula for the committees, with 9 members, in it there are 5 from the CPP, 2 from the FUNCINPEC party, and 2 from the opposition Sam Rainsy party (SRP).

As for the sharing of positions as chairmans, vice chairmans, and general secretaries of the 9 committees, it will be left to the leadership of the three main parties to consider and discuss at a later time.

The CPP rules 5 committees and the FUNCINPEC party rules 4 committees in the present government's term, because the SRP boycots and refuses to join.

In his letter, Mr. Hun Sen says that due to a good political detente and a national reconciliation, and in order to strengthen democracy, the CPP asks for the reformatting of the National Assembly's committees.

Mr. Kim San, general secretary from the FUNCINPEC quota, declines to comment about this decision, saying that he has not seen the prime minister's letter yet.

Government's spokesman Khieu Kanharith says that this is a compromise that the political party that has seats in the National Assembly should have representatives in the committees.
