Member of Opposition Party Arrested in Phnom Penh - 2005-02-03


A member of the Cambodian opposition party, Mr. Cheam Channy, was arrested in Phnom Penh several hours after he was stripped of his parliamentary immunity.

Mr. Cheam Channy was accused of forming an illegal army to topple the government. Mr. Channy has denied the charge.

The Cambodian parliament voted Thursday to strip his immunity and the immunity of his colleagues, Mr. Chea Poch and the opposition party leader, Mr. Sam Rainsy.
