Former King Sihanouk Returns Home


Former King Norodom Sihanouk returns to Cambodia Friday and Cambodian politicians interpret this presence as lessening political tension in the country.

The 84-year old Monarch went to Beijing, China for medical treatment for almost a year, and this trip was alleged as self-exile to evade politics in his country.

At the time he made announcements about his anti Hun Sen's policy on treaties with Vietnam.

King Sihamoni, National Assembly president Chea Sim, Senate president Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Hun Sen, and other high ranking officials went to welcome the former King at the airport.

Cambodian People's Party (CPP) lawmaker Chiem Yiep the former King's return is a sign of warmth and hope for the people of Cambodia.

Royal palace office director Um Daravuth says that former King Sihanouk plans to stay in Cambodia for only two months.
