Sam Rainsy party Criticizes PM Hun Sen for Considering a Regime Change

Opposition Sam Rainsy party (SRP) officials publicly condemn Prime Minister Hun Sen's consideration for a change from constitutional monarchy regime to republic regime. SRP's office Wednesday said in a statement that this is a threat to peace in Cambodia.

In a statement on October 17, Mr. Hun Sen said that if the King will have difficulty signing the Supplemental Border Treaty to the 1985 Border Treaty with Vietnam, then he will consider whether to keep the Monarchy or to change to a republic regime.

Mr. Kem sokha, director of the Cambodia Center of Human Rights said that the new article 133 in the constitution stating about constitutional monarchy, cannot be amended.

Mr. Khieu Kanharith, government spokesman and Minister of Information said that SRP officials do not understand Mr. Hun Sen's intention. He said that the prime minister wants to point out to the Cambodian people about the seriousness of the Republicans who want to use the conflict between the King and the government on border issues to change the government undemocratically.
