Sam Rainsy Will Return to Cambodia in Early October

The opposition party says its president plans to return to Cambodia in early October.

The spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) Ung Bun Ang said Mr. Sam Rainsy has decided to return although pro-government protesters have plan to carry out peaceful protests against him.

Last week, the Interior Ministry gave permission to anti-Sam Rainsy protesters to carry out peaceful protests against the opposition party leader when he returns to Cambodia.

Sam Rainsy left Cambodia in early February right after the national assembly voted to strip his parliamentary immunity and the immunity of his two colleagues, Chea Poch and Cheam Channy. Chea Poch has returned to Cambodia while Cheam Channy is serving a seven year jail term for attempting to form an illegal army.

The SRP spokesman said he is not worried about Sam Rainsy's safety because the protesters are professors and scholars who are educated people.
