SRP Plans to Dismiss One of Its Member

The opposition party plans to dismiss one of its high-ranking members from the party later this week.

The Sam Rainsy party members who ask not to be identified told VOA the party's executive committee will vote to dismiss Mr. Khem Veasna from the SRP for not listening to the party and for attacking the royal family.

Khem Veasna was accused by his own party for attacking the royal family during a public forum organized by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Prey Veng province on May 29.

It's not known whether or not Mr. Khem will be dispelled from the national assembly after he is dispelled from his own party.

SRP secretary-general Eng Chhay Eang said it's up to the SRP executive committee to decide whether to expell one of its member.

Another SRP member said the party has no choice but to expell Mr. Khem to avoid being labeled as the anti-royalist party.

Mr. Khem Veasna said he is not worried about the meeting on the 8th of July to decide on his future with the SRP. He denied what he had said before was against the royal family. He said if his party wanted to know what he had said, all it had to do is listen to his whole speech that day
