Author Remembers US-Backed Coup 45 Years Later

Cambodian National Assembly voted to remove the Head of State, Prince Norodom Sihanouk on March 18, 1970 and proclaimed the Khmer Republic later that year. Forty-five years later an author like Navi Ung-Lancaster still remembers the vivid scenes of high number of people pouring into the streets to celebrate their new freedom. But this did last long, it was the beginning of decades of civil wars and atrocities that killed at least 1.7 million people.
