Miners at South Africa’s Lonmin platinum mine held an illegal strike for higher wages and better living conditions last year, a confrontation that escalated into a deadly police shooting that left 34 strikers dead. In the end, after weeks of tension and negotiation, Lonmin relented and offered raises and said they would improve the community.
