Born in Battambang, Cambodia, Oun Leuth had a normal childhood. But when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia on April 17, 1975, his life was turned upside down. His father was killed three days later. Like millions of Cambodians, he had to work long hours in the rice fields with little to eat. In 1979, Leuth escaped with his mother and siblings, living in several refugee camps along the Thai border, including the Khao I Dang refugee camp. In October of 1983, Leuth resettled in the eastern U.S. state of Maryland. Speaking little English, he determined to work hard in school and received a bachelor degree in sociology from Wiedener University. Leuth is now a K-9 trainer with the U.S. Secret Service, which protects the American president. He stops by for an exclusive interview with VOA Khmer’s Reasey Poch.
