The UN has responded to a request from Prime Minister Hun Sen for a pre-Khmer Rouge era map that he hopes will help resolve border disputes with Vietnam.

“We have provided Cambodia with the relevant information that we have been able to find, and we are continuing to look for key documents sought by the Cambodian government,” Eri Kaneko, spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, told VOA Khmer by phone from New York.

She did not say what kind of details the UN passed on, in response to the July 6 request for a map reportedly deposited with the UN by late King Norodom Sihanouk in 1964.

Villagers in Svay Rieng province have accused Vietnam of encroachment, raising lingering questions about border demarcation, an ongoing negotiation between the two countries. Pro-opposition supporters plan to make a trip to the border area on Sunday to investigate where the alleged encroachment is taking place.

“Wherever our territory is, we have to project it,” said Um Sam An, a lawmaker with the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, who was involved in recent clash with supporters and Vietnam security personnel near the border. “We will ask for cooperation from the Svay Rieng authorities to take us to see where the areas are violated by Vietnam.”
