The Cambodian Supreme Court on Wednesday opened a hearing in the detention of Meach Sovannara, an opposition supporter arrested in July last year after violent pro-opposition demonstrations.

The court is meeting on whether he should remain detained ahead of his trial. He is accused of inciting violence during the July demonstrations, a charge he denies.

Supporters say he is being held for political purposes and for his support of the Cambodia National Rescue Party.

The Rescue Party came to a political deal with the ruling Cambodian People’s Party shortly after the protests and subsequent arrests of opposition activists, including Meach Sovannara. A decision from the court is expected March 11.
