Thousands of Cambodians on Friday gathered for an enshrinement procession for the late King Norodom Sihanouk.

People lined the streets of the capital, as the remains of the king, held in diamond-studded golden urns, were carried on a giant float shaped like a mythological eagle.

Monks chanted prayers, and a 101-gun salute was fired, as members of the royal family, dignitaries and laymen alike joined the procession.

“I much regret the loss of the late king father,” one woman said, as she wept. “Please let his soul live in peace and turn to look after our children.”

Norodom Sihanouk, a major political figure beloved by many Cambodians, died in October 2012. His remains were placed in the Silver Pagoda on the grounds of the Royal Palace.
