Family of 1999 Acid Attack Victim Settles Abroad

The family members of a karaoke star who was the victim of an acid attack more than 10 years ago have fled Cambodia and are now living in Holland, where they say they will continue to fight for justice of others.

The family of Tat Marina, who was allegedly doused with acid by the jealous wife of a government official in 1999, arrived in Holland earlier this month.

“So long as there are such attacks, I cannot sleep, and I feel [perpetrators] should be given a harsh lesson,” Tat Sreypov, the sister of Tat Marina, told VOA Khmer by phone Thursday. “My sister was not the last one. There are others who have fallen victim.”

Tat Sreypov said she would continue to campaign for the victims of attacks.

No arrests have ever been made in the assault of Tat Marina, which was highlighted in a US documentary last year. The film, “Finding Face,” featured members of the woman’s family, who left Cambodia ahead of its premier.

Cambodia is now drafting a law restricting the sale of acid and outlining punishment for perpetrators of the attacks.

“I am very happy there will be a law against acid,” Tat Sreypov said. “Acid is very dangerous, and only those with no brains would use it to attack others, causing sorrow to the victims for the rest of their lives.”

Tat Sequndo, Tat Marina’s brother, said people considering using acid for revenge should first consider the feelings of the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, reported acid attacks are on the rise, up from seven in 2008 to 28 in 2009. Already this year, 10 acid attacks have been recorded.
