PHNOM PENH - The US government has not agreed to allow adoptions from Cambodia, the US Embassy said in a statement Thursday.
Cambodian officials said on Monday adoptions for international families could resume Jan. 1, but that is under Cambodian law.
The US still maintains a ban on adoptions from Cambodia, where it shut down the practice due to concerns over the sale of children by mothers to adoption brokers.
“The United States continues to have discussions with Cambodian government officials about resuming the inter-country adoption process and has made no decision or commitment about the timing,” the embassy said in a statement.
Cambodian officials met with Susan Jacobs, the US envoy for children’s issues, earlier this week.
Before the ban was put in place, between 100 and 200 Cambodian children were adopted by US families every year.
