As a professional photographer and the owner of a bicycle rental shop, Thorn Thanet once used Facebook to reach new customers. But now, she is an actress who has just won Actress of the Year at the Cambodia International Film Festival.
Speaking via Skype with VOA Khmer, the 21-year-old said she was discovered by a producer at the Women’s Media Center, on Facebook, and has so far starred in four movies, all of them dealing with women’s issues.
“I must be good at acting, because he kept asking me to do one after another,” she said.
One of her films, “The Victims,” deals with issues of rape and discrimination against its victims, an ongoing problem in Cambodia.
Thorn Thanet said she does such movies to help raise awareness and education of the issues.
“That’s the least I can do,” she said.
