The Two-Party Coalition Favors the CPP - 2004-03-18

Cambodian political observers agree that the results of Monday's talks between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranariddh have eliminated the possibility of a tripartite coalition government, and put the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) in a very difficult situation.

The President of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights said the agreement has effectively cornered the SRP.

A Newsweek reporter said the Cambodian People's Party stands to gain the most from this agreement, but the SRP can still exert a strong voice in the National Assembly.

A former professor of political sciences at the University of Toronto said it is not a good move for the FUNCINPEC to split from the SRP.
