A Union Leader is Shot Dead in Phnom Penh in Broad Daylight - 2004-01-22

Scores of garment factory workers took time off work to come and say goodbye to their leader. Mr. Chea Vichea was gunned down by two unknown gunmen Thursday morning in front of a newsstand behind Wat Lanka.

Opposition party leader, Mr. Sam Rainsy, called Mr. Chea Vichea's death a great loss for Cambodia, for the garment factory workers and for democracy. FUNCINPEC Minister of Women's Affairs, Mrs. Mou Sochua said the murder of Mr. Chea Vichea affects the development of Cambodia toward democracy. The human rights groups in Cambodia, including Mr. Kem Sokha's Cambodian Center for Human Rights, condemn the killing.

Phnom Penh deputy police chief Heng Pov said his men are investigating the case. The ministry of the interior is urging the public to stay calm and asked anyone with information related to the murder to come foward.
