High Fat Diets Mean Colon Cancer Risk, Doctor Says

People over the age of 50, and especially those who have high-fat diets, are at risk of colon cancer, a doctor said Thursday.

Women with breast or ovarian cancer were especially at risk, said Dr. Taing Tek Hong, who addressed "Hello VOA" listeners Thursday.

Callers who were concerned that colon cancer symptoms are similar to those of hemorrhoids learned they should have regular exams, or colonoscopies.

Surgery is the most common treatment for colon cancer, Taing Tek Hong said, while chemotherapy can delay tumor recurrence and improve survival.
