Sihanouk Vows to Cease Political Commentary

Former King Norodom Sihanouk, who for years has issued a monthly bulletin, announced Friday he will no longer publish articles about politics.

In a note hand-written in French from Beijing, the former monarch said he will stop commenting on politics or news articles from Cambodia and other countries.

In the past, Sihanouk often clipped newspaper articles and scribbled his comments in the margins, binding them together in a monthly bulletin and publishing comments on his Web site, www.norodomsihanouk.info.

Starting March 1, "until I die, I will stop writing articles relating to Cambodia and other countries," Sihanouk wrote.

He will continue helping with social activities, the mercurial leader said. His commentary will be missed, officials on both sides of Cambodia's political divide said Friday.

"If the former king continues to help us with his experience and his political theories, it is very good for his subjects, myself included, because politics involves a lot of strategy," CPP lawmaker Cheam Yiep said.
