Phnom Penh Court Has No Warrant to Detain Ranariddh

Court officials and lawyers claimed Tuesday that there is no warrant to detain Prince Ranariddh, President of Norodom Ranariddh party on corruption charges in the sale of Funcinpec party's headquarters.

There is a concern that when Ranariddh appears in the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on January 5th for the hearing on the charges against him, the court will issue a warrant to detain him.

Phnom Penh court prosecutor Ngeth Sarath says that the prosecutor would normally request the investigative judge to detain the accused during the investigation.

However he says in Ranariddh's case, there are no arrest warrant yet.

Prince Ranariddh's lawyer Ly Sovanna says that the news about intention to detain the prince is a psychological warfare, a threat to the prince's return.

Currently Prince Ranariddh is out of the country.

Ly Sovanna says his client will return to Cambodia at the end of December and will show up at the scheduled court hearing to clear his reputation.
