Khmer Rouge Tribunal Lacks Extra Funding

Opposition Sam Rainsy party (SRP) and NGO officials Monday are concerned about the possible delay of Khmer Rouge tribunal due to lack of budget from the Cambodian government.

Canadian and German Embassy officials in Phnom Penh say that they do not have extra fund to give for the tribunal. (SRP) legislator Eng Chhay Eang says that he regrets this delay very much because the former Khmer Rouge leaders are old and sick. He says that when the Thai government demanded millions of dollars in damages to its Embassy due to a riot against the Thais, the Cambodian government had the money.

U.N. coordinator for the Khmer Rouge tribunal Michelle Lee says that last week diplomats said that their countries are thinking about contributing 10 millions 800,000 dollars, the amount which the Cambodian government said it still needs to meet the total cost of some 56 million dollars.
