Cambodia And Vietnam Exchange Letters of Border Ratification

Cambodia and Vietnam plan to exchange letters of ratification of the supplemental border treaty to the 1985 border treaty which Prime Minister Hun Sen signed with Vietnam on October 10, after both countries announced its formal implementation.

King Sihamoni signed the controversial supplemental border treaty on November 30 after the National Assembly and the Senate ratified it.

Cambodia Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a news release Monday says that Cambodia and Vietnam plan to exchange letters of ratification at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Phnom Penh at 4:00PM Tuesday, during Vietnam Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Dy Nien's visit.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Secretary Long Vissalo says that Mr. Nguyen will pay a visit to Mr. Hun Sen.

Mr. Hun Sen's signing of this treaty resulted in the arrests and imprisonment of Beehive 105 FM radio owner Mam Sonando and President of Cambodia Independent Teachers Association, on government defaming charges, and a number of border activists fleeing the country for fear of arrests.

Opposition Sam Rainsy party lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang says that Vietnam profits from this treaty, and Cambodia Center for Human Rights director Kem Sokha says that both countries receive profits.
