Reactions After The Ratification of the Supplemental Border Treaty

After opposition Sam Rainsy party's (SRP) members announcing their mourning of the loss of Cambodia's rights to her territory to Vietnam, the history bell rang, with these 97 members observing this event with a moment of silence and wearing mourning clothing. Mr. Kong Korm of the SRP expresses regret over the loss of these rights.

Vietnam Embassy's counselor in Phnom Penh told VOA that Vietnam supports the National Assembly's ratification too because it is a joint affair.

US Embassy's spokesman in Phnom Penh, Jeff Daiger said that the Embassy has no real comment on the treaty istself. The treaty is a matter between the government of Cambodia and Vietnam. However the Embassador expresses his personal view that it is important for Cambodia and Vietnam to reach some kind of compromise on the border issue, and it is important for all countries in the 21st. century to have a defined border for their own national securities.

Mr. Kem Sokha, Cambodia Center for Human Rights' director, said that now the National Assembly ratified the Supplemental treaty, and it is time for the government to free Mr. Mam Sonando, Beehive FM 105 radio station's manager, and Mr. Rong Chhun, president of Independent Cambodian Teachers Association, from Prey Sar prison.
