Opposition Party Dismisses One of Its Member

The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) dismissed one of its high-ranking members from the party Friday for attacking the royal family and his own party.

SRP Acting President, Kong Koam, who chaired today's meeting, said the party's steering committee has spent some time debating Khem Veasna's case before deciding to dismiss him from the party by secret ballot.

Khem Veasna was accused by his party of attacking the royal family, during a forum organized by NDI on May 29. Khem Veasna denied the charges.

Khem Veasna said his dismissal is the work of a group of SRP members.

The ousted SRP member said he cares more about what the people thinks of him than about losing his position.

SRP secretary general Eng Chhay Eang said Khem Veasna has one week to lodge his complaint.

Khem Veasna said he is not going to file a complaint to the SRP because all the establishments within the opposition party are dominated by the very same people who want to get rid of him.
