Spain Arrests 16 Suspected Islamist Militants

Spanish police have arrested 16 suspected Islamist militants.

Eleven of those arrested are accused of having links to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the terrorist leader blamed for many of the bloodiest attacks in Iraq.

The other five are suspected of being linked to the March 2004 train bombings in Madrid, which killed 191 people.

The Interior Ministry says some 500 police participated in raids carried out in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, the southern region of Andalusia and Ceuta, a Spanish enclave north of Morocco.

The arrests follow raids in Germany Tuesday. Authorities there arrested three Iraqis suspected of providing support to Ansar al-Islam, which is based in northern Iraq and believed to have links to al-Zarqawi.
